The New York Islanders are reportedly eyeing a long-term contract extension for defenseman Matthew Schaefer, following the team’s recent blockbuster deal with star forward Cale Makar. Analysts suggest Schaefer’s strong defensive play and leadership could make him a prime candidate for a significant commitment, mirroring the Islanders’ strategy of locking down key players. With the team investing heavily in top talent, Schaefer’s potential extension would further solidify their blue-line depth ahead of the upcoming season. The move would also align with the franchise’s recent trend of prioritizing homegrown talent in high-profile negotiations.
