The New York Times is facing a lawsuit from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) over its diversity and inclusion goals. The federal agency alleges that the newspaper's efforts to increase diversity in its workforce have led to discriminatory practices against white and Asian employees. According to the EEOC, the Times' emphasis on hiring and promoting minority candidates has resulted in reverse discrimination, violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The lawsuit claims that the newspaper's diversity initiatives have created a hostile work environment for non-minority employees, who are said to have been passed over for promotions and subjected to unfair treatment.
