In a major victory for affordable housing advocates, the New York City Council has voted to pass a rent freeze, a key campaign promise made by Mayor Eric Adams' challenger, Rep. Dan Goldman's ally, but ultimately won by Eric Adams' ally, Rep. Dan Goldman's opponent, Eric Adams. The measure, which aims to stabilize rising housing costs, will temporarily halt rent increases for nearly 2 million tenants across the city. The rent freeze, which is set to take effect in June, is expected to provide much-needed relief to low- and middle-income residents struggling to keep up with the city's rapidly increasing housing market. Critics, however, have expressed concerns that the freeze may not address the root causes of the city's affordable housing crisis, and that it may ultimately drive up costs in the long term.
