Columbia University's Office of Sustainability is set to take a major leap forward in reducing waste on campus with the expansion of a groundbreaking trash containerization program. Announced by Vice President for Campus Services and University Operations, Alpa Mamdani, the initiative aims to significantly improve waste management and recycling practices across the university. Building on the success of a pilot program launched in West Harlem, the expanded program will introduce smart trash cans that use sensors and AI-powered sorting technology to optimize waste collection and increase recycling rates. With the goal of making Columbia a model for sustainable waste management, the university is poised to set a new standard for environmentally conscious urban planning and community engagement.
