In a major victory for low-income New Yorkers, the city council and Mayor have reached a landmark agreement to significantly expand the Fair Fares program. The initiative, which provides discounted MetroCards to eligible residents, will see its eligibility criteria broadened and its funding increased, making it possible for thousands more to access affordable public transportation. The expansion is expected to benefit an estimated 200,000 New Yorkers, with the program's budget growing from $24 million to $106 million annually. This move comes as a response to growing concerns over transportation affordability and accessibility, particularly in outer boroughs and low-income communities.
