An archaeologist is leading an effort to uncover and document New York City’s vanished ritual baths, known as mikvehs, many of which were buried, abandoned, or destroyed over time. These historically significant structures, once central to Jewish communities, now exist only in faded records or hidden beneath urban development. The search highlights the erasure of cultural heritage as cities expand, raising questions about preservation and memory. The project aims to piece together their legacy before traces disappear entirely.
