The Bronx Zoo has reintroduced the American chestnut, a tree species nearly wiped out by blight in the early 20th century, as part of a conservation effort. Scientists have developed a blight-resistant hybrid to restore the iconic hardwood, once a dominant forest tree across the eastern United States. The zoo’s initiative aims to revive ecosystems that once relied on the chestnut’s nuts and wood, now rare in the wild. This marks a milestone in reforestation and genetic research for endangered native species.
